Tucked into the Chequamegon Bay country of far northern Wisconsin, ABC Raceway has been a Saturday night tradition for generations of Northland race fans. The track’s roots stretch back to the mid-1950s, when organized stock car racing first rolled into the Ashland area on a baseball field near Ino and later a hayfield outside Moquah.
By 1965, a group of local racing diehards passed a hat, scraped together enough cash for a stopwatch and some flags, and formed the Ashland-Bayfield County Racing Association, the not-for-profit that still runs the track today. They bought the old Brevak family property for $2,500, christened it ABC Raceway, and got to work.
Six decades later, the red clay still draws packed grandstands every Saturday night, with WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks, and the track’s signature Six-Cylinder division putting on side-by-side action. ABC is also home to the legendary Red Clay Classic, the Northland’s premier end-of-season stock car event, now drawing over 200 competitors and 5,000-plus fans across two unforgettable days of racing.
